DEEP Earth Energy Production says Canada’s first geothermal production and injection well test has exceeded expectations. The wells are in the southeast portion of the province, near Torquay. The company says their testing indicates multiple geothermal power facilities could be supported.
DEEP will begin drilling this month with the deepest horizontal well to date in Saskatchewan’s history, allowing for the installation of a large diameter submersible pump. This will be the first step in building the first geothermal power facility in Canada. It will be capable of generating 20 Mega Watts of power; that’s enough power for about 20 thousand households.
DEEP is also looking at utilizing waste oilfield flare gas and solar generation to power things like the facility’s cooling towers, lighting and pumps. The end goal is the production of clean power while significantly reducing fossil fuel emissions. Waste heat from the project will be used by private and public sector greenhouse developments. President and CEO Kirsten Marcia says, “DEEP’s vision to build 100 Mega Watts of geothermal power and greenhouse development could be a new $1 billion industry for Southeast Saskatchewan.
