The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency says this province has had significantly fewer wildfires so far this year, at 125 as opposed to the 5 year average of 405.
Acting Vice-President of Operations, Steve Roberts, says the situation is different in the United States where there have been 24 deaths from wildfires raging in California , Washington and Oregon.
The provincial government has received requests for help from both Washington and Oregon so 2 air tankers and a lead plane have been dispatched along with 8 staff.
They are stationed in Washington, but are also supplying support to Oregon.
In Saskatchewan this year, the challenge has been more about flooding in the north.
Roberts expects the wet weather is why there have been fewer wildfires and also because people were staying home because of COVID-19 or because of the weather.
Crews that would have normally been responding to wildfires in Saskatchewan this summer, were reassigned to assist with the flooding in the north.
The wildfire season is in its last few weeks, and Roberts says with fall hunting and combine fires during harvesting, he urges residents to exercise caution to prevent wildfires.
