The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations says there has been an increase in the deaths of children in the care of the Ministry of Social Services. The FSIN Executive is calling on both levels of government to work with First Nations and fully implement funding for Bill C92. The FSIN says there have been more deaths of children this year than in the same period a year ago. Chief Bobby Cameron says, “Our children belong in the care of their communities where they will remain connected to our languages, cultures, and traditions and in a loving place that will reinforce their First Nation’s identity.”
Bill C92 was designed to affirm and recognize First Nation jurisdiction over child and family services. It received Royal Assent over a year ago.
