Tuesday, Nutrien announced it has curtailed production at its Cory potash mine because of the Port of Vancouver strike.
The potash producer says the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Canada strike has resulted in loss of export capacity through Canpotex’s Neptune terminal.
Nutrien expects full-year 2023 Potash adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation will fall below the bottom end of its previous guidance range. This is due to the strike but also lower global potash prices and the continued outage at the Port of Portland which suffered significant equipment failure in April.
An updated full-year 2023 guidance reflecting these impacts at the time of our second quarter results on Wednesday, August 2, 2023.
Nutrien’s President and CEO Ken Seitz says “The disruption at the Port of Vancouver has resulted in the curtailment of production at our Cory potash mine and if prolonged could also impact production at our other potash mines in Saskatchewan. We urge the parties in this dispute to come to a swift resolution to prevent further damage to the Canadian economy.”
Canpotex Limited (Canpotex) is a joint venture that is wholly owned by two Saskatchewan potash producers—Mosaic and Nutrien—which manages and operates a fleet of customized railcars, port terminal facilities, and ocean vessels to transport potash.
