Late Friday, the death toll in Maui had been updates to 80, as firefighters continued to contain the fires spreading across the island.
A review of the state’s emergency response is being launched by government officials, as residents criticized relief efforts as insufficient.
Records indicated that emergency sirens weren’t activated at the state or county level during the wildfires, though alerts were sent to cellphones and broadcast networks. These would have alerted residents that they need to evacuate, and possibly saved lives. The Lahaina fire was the second deadliest in U.S. history, and officials warn that the death toll will probably rise as debris is searched and cleared.
More than 1400 people are in emergency shelters and are sharing limited resources.
