The Ministry of Environment is reviewing old rules and revealing new opportunities as hunting season approaches. Travis Williams, Wildlife Allocations Specialist with the Ministry of Environment says regular hunting licenses came available for purchase today (Tues), which can be bought online through the Hunting, Angling, and Trapping License system. Licenses can also be bought in person at any Saskatchewan hunting license issuer, Ministry of Environment offices, and select provincial park. He adds that consent is required when hunting on private land, which covers 85 per cent of southern Saskatchewan. The consent can be obtained in written form, orally, or through signage.
Chronic Wasting Disease results from last year are available on the Government of Saskatchewan website, alongside information on CWD testing. The disease has been found in 60 of the province’s wildlife management zones.
Something new this year, a guided wolf license has been added to offer non-resident hunters an opportunity to harvest a wolf. This license was created to help support the outfitting industry and provide more opportunities for outfitters.
Williams also reminds that the Hunter Harvest Surveys are now mandatory. All hunters are required to complete a survey for each license they purchase, whether they hunted or not, prior to the deadline indicated on the license. Additional hunting season information is available in the Saskatchewan Hunters and Trappers Guide, which can be downloaded online, or available at Ministry of Environment field offices, license issuers, some provincial parks, and conservation field offices.
