The City of Yellowknife declared a State of Local Emergency yesterday because of three nearby wildfires, but an evacuation order hasn’t been issued at this point. There are a number of wildfires in the Northwest Territories. K’atl’odeeche First Nation, Hay River and Fort Smith have been evacuated.
As of Tuesday morning in British Columbia, there were 377 active fires and there have been 1,804 so far this year. Saskatchewan has 35 wildfires, compared to the around 50 a week or so ago, and none are considered uncontained. The province has had 404 fires this year, while the five year average is 333.
According to the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System, the latest numbers for the country are from August 9th. As of a week ago, there had been 5,591 fires so far this year, as opposed to the ten-year average of 4,367. The number of hectares burned is way above the average, with 13.3 million hectares burned this year compared to the ten year average of 2.1.
