Berries Pushed to the Brink in W-C-B-L Playoffs, Again, This Time by Red Sox

The Saskatoon Berries went 1-and-1 in extra inning games over the weekend, meaning they’re facing the end of their 2025 W-C-B-L season for the second time in less than a week.

After an emotional, thrilling and heart-stopping 16-12 victory in 10 innings on Saturday night at Cairns Field to eliminate Moose Jaw in the third and final game of an East Division semi-finals series, the Berries couldn’t find overtime magic on Sunday in an 8-7 loss to the Regina Red Sox in Game 1 of the best-of-three East Division final. The Sunday setback, before 1,686 fans at Cairns Field, was eerily similar to the Game 1 loss to Moose Jaw last Wednesday as Saskatoon had 17 hits, but left 12 runners on base, seven them over the final seven innings as the Berries were held scoreless after taking a 7-5 lead through four innings. Saskatoon had runners on base in each of the eighth, ninth and 10th innings with the score tied, including the potential winning run in scoring position in both the ninth and 10th frames, but couldn’t score. In the 11th inning, Regina scored an unearned run off losing pitcher Tanner Hosick in the top half and the Berries responded by getting the first two men on base in the bottom of the frame, only to make three straight outs against winning Red Sox’ pitcher Ayden Page. Second baseman Zayd Brannigan’s only hit in six plate appearances drove in the winning run for Regina while centre fielder Ian Montz hit a home run for the Red Sox. For Saskatoon, second baseman Abiam Medina had five hits in six at bats, drove in two runs and scored twice and shortstop Nathan Houston (pictured) was 2-for-6 at the plate with two R-B-I. Losing Game 1 of the series at home means the Berries have to replicate what they did in the first set, win Game 2 on the road and force a Game 3 at home. Saskatoon visits Regina Monday night. If Saskatoon wins, Game 3 is Tuesday at Cairns Field. Following are media scrums with head coach Joe Carnahan, Medina and Houston plus the official box score courtesy the W-C-B-L…..
