If it seems like there has been an unusual amount of storm activity in Saskatchewan this year, Environment Canada meteorologist Terri Lang says this has been an active year especially compared to last year which wasn’t so much.
She thinks the reason why is because of the abnormally dry spring the province experienced which delayed the crop development and crops are the main contributor to how much moisture we will have and moisture is a component in severe weather developing.
It was another active night for storms in Saskatchewan bringing rain, hail, and lightning. 52 mm of rain was reported west of Humboldt, Canora received 40 millimetres in 25 minutes, Wadena had 23 millimetres in 40 minutes and 63.5 millimetres was reported from south of Davidson.
There was 4.6 millimetres of rain recorded at the airport in Saskatoon. Meteorologist Terri Lang says it may have seemed like Saskatoon should have registered more rain because it came in with a whole bunch of lightning strikes. She points out that within 50 kilometres of Saskatoon there were just over 19-hundred lightning strikes and she says probably double that with the in-cloud lightning that Environment Canada doesn’t detect.
In addition to rain, there was hail. Macklin received two bouts of hail with the biggest being golf ball sized. Golf ball sized hail was also reported around Elbow, near Loreburn, toonie sized hail south of Rockglen and loonie sized hail southeast of Biggar.
