The Saskatoon Police Service is reviewing recent court rulings concerning former Constable Jarret Gelowitz. The 32 year old was found not guilty of assault during an arrest. The judge ruled that Gelowitz used justifiable force. The incident happened in December of 2016 after a police pursuit, ending near Ruth Street and Underwood Avenue in the Avalon neighbourhood.
Police Chief Troy Cooper says, “The decision to dismiss the former Constable was based on unsuitability for service and not based on criminal proceedings.” Under the Police Act, an independent hearing has been scheduled for this September.
Cooper says the Police Service relies on public confidence and works hard to sustain the trust people have in its officers.
Gelowitz had two other assault charges, but one was stayed and the Crown decided against taking the other to trial.
