Even with the heat warnings in southern Saskatchewan, south of Saskatoon, SaskPower doesn’t expect the summer consumption record to be broken. Spokesperson Jordan Jackle says it’s always a possibility, but last year on August 10th most temperatures were over 35 degrees, approaching 40 in some cases.
Power consumption that day was a record-breaking over 35-hundred megawatts.
Thursday’s consumption was 34-hundred megawatts.
Because of storms throughout the province, there have been power outages. Jackle says the causes of unplanned outages usually fall in one of 3 categories – the weather, equipment failure or nature. That means things like birds, squirrels or trees. On Thursday, a goose flew into a power line in Regina, knocking out power west of the downtown area, with power restored in about an hour.
