Onion Lake Cree Nation activist Charmaine Stick, trying to make leadership on the First Nation accountable to the people, is taking her fight to Ottawa. She, with help from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation is delivering thousands of petition signatures straight to the Prime Minister’s Office, demanding the federal government enforce the First Nations Financial Transparency Act. It requires audited financial statements just like other municipalities and governments. The act has not been enforced since Justin Trudeau took office.
Stick and the CTF will also be commenting about a Saskatchewan Court of Queen’s Bench decision to find the Onion Lake Cree Nation in contempt of court for refusing to publish the band’s financial statements as well as salaries and expenses for the chief and council. Onion Lake has 30 days to publish its 2017 and 2018 statements or face a fine of $10-thousand.
