First Nations families attending a camp to revitalize the practices of their culture were instead met with handwritten racist signs with messages like “useless Indians”. The camp was hosted by the Yellow Quill First Nation in Somme, which is about 300 kilometres east of Saskatoon.
The First Nation contacted the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations to express their anger and frustrations with the situation. FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron says this is yet another validation that racism is still very much thriving in Saskatchewan. The gathering was supposed to revitalize the culture and traditions lost through assimilation teach youth about their identity as First Nations people, but Cameron says, now it is also teaching them about the reality of growing up with racism.
