The Minister Responsible for First Nations, Metis and Northern Affairs is backing the sentiments expressed last week by FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron.
Lori Carr is condemning what she calls the hateful and racist signs that were found at the cultural camp hosted by the Yellow Quill First Nation. Those attending were met with handwritten racist signs with messages like “useless Indians”. She says the RCMP is treating it as the serious incident it is.
Carr says every time such actions take place, they should be condemned, wherever they occur.
FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron had said last week that the gathering was supposed to revitalize the culture and traditions lost through assimilation and teach youth about their identity as First Nations people, but now it is also teaching them about the reality of growing up with racism.
