We are coming upon that bittersweet time when the nights cool down, it gets darker quicker and harvest begins, which means you could be sharing the road with farm equipment. Some tips from SGI include being patient and passing only when it’s safe to do so if you get behind some farm machinery. Give yourself plenty of time and space to safely pass.
Farmers are usually only transporting their machinery from one field to another, so you won’t be behind them for long. Make sure to give them plenty of room, because whoever is driving the equipment may not be able to see you.
SGI says between 2013 and 2018, there were on average 3.8 collisions in August involving farm equipment on public roads. For the whole year, in 2013 there were 35 collisions as compared to the preliminary numbers from 2018, with 12, however there were 2 fatalities last year and in 2017.
