Oyen, Alberta RCMP say 10 vehicles were involved in a fiery crash on Highway 9 around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
There were seven passenger vehicles and three semi trucks involved in the crash. One of the semi trucks was hauling fuel and the fuel ignited causing several vehicle to catch fire. A second semi was hauling butane and the RCMP say the collision area was consumed with flames.
The Hamlet of Chinook was evacuated , one person was killed, two of the more seriously injured were flown to hospital and 7 others were taken by ground ambulance. The fire was put out around 8 p.m. Tuesday night and people were allowed to return to their homes.
Hazmat teams are expected on the scene later this morning to help with the clean up which, due to its complexity, is expected to last until noon today which means traffic is being re-routed.
Oyen is about 40 kilometres west of the Alberta-Saskatchewan boundary and about an hour west of Kindersley.
