Fond-du-Lac’s airport runway is slowly deteriorating and the community is waiting for provincial funding.
After a fatal plane crash almost 2 years ago, the federal government shut down the runway for safety measures. Both the provincial and federal governments promised funding.
The federal government has approved $12-million, but the Chief of the Fond-du-Lac Dene Nation says their application to the province was denied. Louie Mercredi says it was late and incomplete, but they don’t have the technical people that can do these applications. He wonders why Moose Jaw’s application for an airport was accepted, even though it was late as well.
The Saskatchewan NDP is calling on the province to address the safety concerns of the northern community. SaskBuilds Critic, Cathy Sproule wonders if this is party politics, where the province can later wonder why the federal government is taking so long to fund various projects. She explains that previously the province delayed signing an infrastructure deal with the federal government until it won the flexibility to spend less money on public transit and green infrastructure, then blamed the federal government for delays in getting projects approved.
