The Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce is on board with the City’s goal to combat climate change, but isn’t in favour of the proposed Low Emissions Community plan as it stands right now. President & CEO, Darla Lindbjerg, says The Chamber’s membership about the increased tax burden and costs that could be associated with retrofits for energy efficient upgrades to buildings.
She agrees with the CEO of the Saskatoon & Region Home Builders’ Association who spoke at Monday’s Council meeting. Chris Guerette suggested the city not get ahead of the National Building Code, which is issued by the National Research Council every 5 years and will be published again in 2020 to be put in effect in Saskatchewan in 2021.
The eventual plan which will be implemented over a course of years, not all at once, has 40 actions with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent by 2050.
