He has been training since birth and now Quinn is ready to go to work.
The two-year-old Golden Retriever-Lab cross is the new Victim Services Facility Dog for central and northern Saskatchewan.
The Saskatchewan Health Authority and Gateway Regional Victim Services have struck a three-year agreement to have Quinn in the field in many different capacities.
The dog will be brought to accident scenes and be on hand to provide emotional support to ease the traumatic effects of tragic accidents or violence.
Quinn was trained at Dogs with Wings to work eight hour days in a variety of situations.
Executive Director Doreen Slessor says he can even assist during police interviews. She points out young children who have been victimized may feel more comfortable telling their stories to Quinn who can also be with them to testify in court.
Slessor also points out he can also recognize fear or anxiety and will put his head on the victim’s lap or nudge them looking for attention to diffuse the situation.
Officials say the emphasis of the program is serving the most vulnerable like child and domestic sexual abuse victims as well as seniors.
Slessor says Quinn has been goofy and affectionate since he was a puppy and is perfect for the job.
