The students with their notebooks and pencil cases all shiny and new are heading back to school, so the Saskatoon Police Service reminds drivers to slow down. Those roads that were so quiet in the summer are back to being a bustle of activity. Staff Sgt. Patrick Barbar explains that if you continue to go the summer speed limit of 50, meaning 20 km/h over, your ticket will be $310. For every kilometre over that, another $4 is tacked on. Another infraction seen particularly at elementary schools in residential areas where the streets are narrower, is u-turns with parents and caregivers dropping the kids off. Barbar says these are dangerous maneuvers because students crossing the street don’t expect it and the drivers have limited vision as they are doing a u-turn. It’s also against the law, with a $90 penalty. Saskatoon Police will be checking on the school zones, as a reminder to slow down to 30 and follow the school zone bylaws.
