A proposal to develop a 3.25 million tonnes-per-year solution potash mine in southern Saskatchewan has received conditional approval from the Ministry of Environment. CanPacific Potash must now pursue additional provincial and local approvals for its Albany Potash Project, about 50 kilometres southeast of Regina. Minister responsible Dustin Duncan says concerns about potential impacts on native grasslands and wetlands have been addressed. For impacts that can’t be avoided, the company must develop a compensation plan which would include methods to restore or enhance existing areas, or create new native prairie and wetlands and provide a timeline for completing the work and for monitoring the areas. CanPacific must also submit a signed Development Plan Agreement to the RM of Francis prior too construction and obtain further ministerial approval for future development of the 20 year well-field areas.
