The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations says it is pleased that Friday (Sept 6) the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal has ordered the federal government to pay up to $40,000 to each First Nations child, placed in the on reserve child welfare system.

The FSIN says the ruling is a result of Canada under-funding on-reserve child welfare services and covers all children in the care of the system at any point from January 1st, 2006, to a date to be determined by the Tribunal.

The First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada issued an information sheet Friday on the decision and says Canadian Human Rights Act allows for up to $20,000 per victim of discrimination and up to another $20,000 per victim if the discrimination was wilful and reckless.
