The city’s environment, utilities and corporate services committee will discuss the future of the curbside recycling program this morning (mon). A report heading to committee shows that fees for the program are expected to rise anywhere from $7 dollars to $7.50 a month next year. That’s up from the current $5.66 residents pay every month for the service. The city is currently in negotiations to finalize a deal with the highest ranked proponent from the RFP that was issued earlier this year for collection, processing and marketing of recyclable material for the year 2020 and beyond. The city’s current contract with Loraas expires on January 1st, 2020. City Councillors will look at a variety of options including one that would allow the current acceptable items except for black plastics, polycoat and plastics number 3 through 7. The city says plastics number 3 through 7 make up only 1.5 per cent of weight in the recycling stream and that the plastics have become difficult to recycle as there are only a few domestic market opportunities. Councillors also have the option to cancel the curbside organics program, although City Administration does not recommend that option. Today’s (mon) meeting will get underway at 9 a.m. at City Hall.
