The future of Saskatchewan’s forests amid climate change is being studied by the Saskatchewan Research Council. It’s part of a project involving forest companies to see what effect climate change is having on forested areas and then devise plans to minimize its impact. S-R-C Scientist Mark Johnston says they are using computer models to examine before and after images and are particularly interested in tracking events like forest fires and flooding. Johnston also says the data can be used to determine if the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will contribute to forest growth. The research began about 18 months ago and is scheduled to wrap up next summer.
