The Chief of the Saskatoon Police Service says a constable fired in August of last year is being taken back because he has accepted responsibility for his actions.
Jerret Gelowitz faced three criminal charges. He was acquitted on one with the others withdrawn and stayed by prosecutors.
Chief Troy Cooper says the dismissal was based on an overall record of neglect of duty and discreditable conduct over a three year period including the use of excessive force during an arrest.
Cooper stands behind the firing and the reinstatement following the appeal process saying a year on workplace probation is the appropriate measure of discipline and fits the offenses Gelowitz has admitted to.
The Chief feels public trust is maintained as the reinstatement agreement is based on accountability with safeguards built around the constable’s progressive reintegration
Gelowitz will do administrative work until deemed fit to return to full duty.
