Not only was there too much confusing paperwork for the trucking industry when registering under the new carbon tax, it continues with the quarterly reports. Nicole Sinclair with the Saskatchewan Trucking Association believes it places an administrative burden on these companies, and especially the smaller businesses that may not have the resources, so have to take time away from the road to fill it all out.
The paperwork is aimed at any trucking company in the provinces that don’t have an approved federal carbon pricing plan. Sinclair says, “This process doesn’t work for Saskatchewan. We are a landlocked province with a very spread out population and more kilometres of highway than any other province.” She believes the carbon tax penalizes the trucking companies and in the long run, the consumers, in a situation where there is no other choice for transportation of consumer goods. Sinclair stresses the trucking industry also wants to pollute less and burn less fuel, but they don’t want to be taxed on necessary business operations.
