Today, Saskatchewan marked the end of institutionalized style living for people with intellectual disabilities.
The last residents of Valley View Centre south of Moose Jaw officially moved out the building Tuesday.
In total 153 adults with intellecutal disabilities have been successfully transitioned to community based homes and 36 new group homes have been purchased, renovated or built.
In addition, 2 new safety net homes have been developed to respond to people who are in crisis and need additional services. A third is in the planning stage.
The government announced in 2012 it was closing Valley View Centre. Each person who moved out had a transition plan where they and their families were invited to make choices about where they wanted to live, who they wanted to live with and how they were going to live.
Numerous residential and day program services for people with disabilities have been created in Esterhazy, Gravelbourg, Kindersley, Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, Regina, Saskatoon, Swift Current, Warman and Wilkie.
The 800 acre complex opened in 1955 and was once home to 1,100 people.
