Farmers in the Quill Lakes are say the local flooding crisis is far from over.
The executive director of the Quill Lakes Watershed Association, Rita Marcinowski says over the years 92-thousand acres of farmland have been taken out of production.
“If you were to take a grand tally of what the flooding has cost the province in regards to lost income, lost infrastructure, that would come in at over 253 million dollars.”
That number is based on an economic impact study by Dr. James Warren with the University of Regina. It covers losses between 2012 and 2018.
Marcinowski says the Quill Lakes Watershed Association is calling on the provincial government to address the issue and would like to see a hydraulic modeling study of the Quill Lakes and the drainage system in order to develop a long term management plan.
She notes that a million dollar environmental impact study would then need to be done.
