RCMP say one of their police vehicles was shot up by a suspected drunk driver last week. It happened around 10:15 on Thursday night when a Carnduff RCMP member was taking a 65 year old man home after he’d been arrested, charged and released for impaired driving and refusal to submit a breath test. Police describe the accused was cooperative and say he was being turned over to his spouse at their home until his court appearance.
The accused was taken to the attached double garage where he was met by his spouse but then started to walk away. RCMP say the officer told him to remain where he was but he told the RCMP member he was going to use the bathroom and disappeared through a doorway inside the garage.
The officer asked the man’s wife if there was a bathroom in that area and she said no which is when the officer says he heard the distinctive sound of a shotgun being loaded. The accused came out carrying the shotgun pointed at the ceiling – at this point the officer had drawn his gun and told the man to drop the shotgun – but the man left the garage and fired into the police cruiser before taking off on foot.
The accused was tracked down in a wooded area, unarmed and surrendered. The shotgun was recovered as well. The accused is in court in Estevan today.
