On Monday Saskatoon City Council voted in favour of trying to increase use of the current Farmer’s Market site to six days a week. When the building closes to conduct roof repairs in the new year, that council decision and an end to the lease held by the current Saskatoon Farmers’ Market Co-operative, may mean different tenants occupy the space versus what you see now when you go to the Farmer’s Market in Saskatoon.
Erika Quiring, Executive Director of the Farmers’ Market say if they do in fact relocate and the City does bring in a new tentant at River Landing once the building re-opens that will house a farmers’ market, that could very well hurt the co-op. She says they’ll be competing for vendors.
Last year, the City rolled out a RFP for a tenant that would utilize the building 6 days a week. That RFP was pulled once was realized that repairs were needed to the roof. Quiring says they made a proposal last year that would have worked very well for the current site.
“It was a beautiful proposal where we had a range of community activities partnering with a couple of other non-profits and some for-profit enterprises.”
She adds the co-op may submit another proposal if the city does indeed look for more bids in the future. The last day at River Landing for the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market Co-operative is December 22nd.
