Being unable to score victimized the Saskatoon Blades in a 2-1 setback in Red Deer Tuesday night.
Rebels’ goaltender Ethan Anders played a large role in the Bridge City Bunch’s third straight loss…but so, too, did a couple of disallowed goals late in the third period that would’ve tied the score and, possibly, forced overtime.
The first disallowed goal came with 5:02 remaining in regulation time when Scott Walford beat Anders, only to have referee Tyler Adair immediately wave it off because Kjell Kjemhus was said to be in the goal crease. The second disallowed goal happened with just 94 seconds left in the third frame when Adair ruled Tristen Robins touched the puck with his stick above the cross-bar of the Red Deer goal, directing it down and into the net. A video review didn’t change the on-ice ruling and the Rebels survived for their first home win of the season.
“It stings a little bit right now, for sure,” admitted Blue and Gold associate coach Ryan Marsh when it came to the frustration of losing with the disallowed goals. “Especially that first one. I really thought that was pretty clean. I’m not sure what (the referee) saw there, but even the second one, it looked like it could’ve went off one of their sticks, too.
“But, it’s a disappointing result. I certainly liked the effort, especially in the third period.”
Red Deer also tallied twice on the power play…Arshdeep Bains and Ethan Sakowich sandwiching a Riley McKay marker in the second period…on the first four man advantages of the game. The Blades failed to score on any of their three power plays. Saskatoon out-shot the Rebels 35-24…15-3 in the third period and 26-10 over the final 40 minutes but were continually denied by 19-year-old Anders.
Red Deer improved to 2-3-0 with the win while the loss was the third straight for the Bridge City Bunch, dropping their early season log to 1-3-0. The Blue and Gold are in Lethbridge Wednesday night. The broadcast on 98-COOL begins with the Sardinia Family Restaurant pre-game show at 6 o’clock and the play-by-play at 7. Following is the official game summary from the W-H-L…
