Students at the University of Saskatchewan are gearing up for a problem-solving event this weekend on campus. Ecohack is back for a second year. Community partners including the city, Nine Mile Legacy, The Safe Water Drinking Foundation and Sarcan will challenge the students to deal with environmental and sustainability issues in their industries. The Project Manager for Ecohack says participants utilize the rapid-iteration hackathon model used by computer science and technology programs. Liz Kuley who is also the Undergraduate Environmental Programs Coordinator calls it a high-tech trial-and-error method. She stresses students are able to employ anything at their disposal to solve the problems including knowledge in marketing, engineering or coding. Kuley feels the exercise adds problem-solving skills to go along with the expertise students are developing in the classroom. They have one day to find the answers as presentations are are planned for Saturday night in the Memorial Union Building. Several prizes are up for grabs including best presentation in addition to the most innovative, impactful and riskiest solutions. Kuley says interest in Ecohack has taken off since last year’s inaugural event and expects to run the competition annually.
