Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh became the third federal leader to make a stop in Saskatoon during the 2019 election campaign Friday.
Singh attracted a crowd of all ages with several university students in attendance. Many of them say the NDP’s platform is for the people with the party’s plan for dental and drug coverage. During his Saskatoon stop, Singh touched his plan to change the procurement process in Canada. The current process allows public dollars to go to companies outside of Canada.
Singh says that process has hurt a variety of sectors including steel and manufacturing. He adds the current government lost a billion dollar investment by not choosing Canadian trains when the country has companies that produce trains including Bombardier.
The NDP Leader says Singh says he’s putting forward that a Canadian procurement process should require made in Canada content when using public dollars, which in return will support Canadian businesses.
Earlier this week, the People’s Party candidate for Saskatoon-Grasswood posted a political cartoon on his Twitter feed depicting the federal NDP Leader wearing a turban with a bomb on it. Mark Friesen said he didn’t look closely at the cartoon before making post and thought it was a toque.
In response, Singh said when you have images that try and inflame hatred or strike fear, what it does is create a less safer society for a lot of people which the NDP Leader says is a problem. Singh says that’s the problem with the PPC in general. “They’re trying to build on fear, build on division, try to have people pit against each other.”
Singh says as political leaders, their job should be about bringing people together and showing that we all have more in common with each other.
Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer was in Saskatoon last Saturday at the Farmer’s Market and Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau landed in Saskatoon on the heels of his brown face scandal on September 19th.
