If you haven’t registered to vote yet, you can still do so at your polling station. Today (Mon) is the 43rd federal election and the polls in Saskatchewan are open from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Polling hours are different, depending on which time zone you are in across the country, so that voting begins and ends around the same time. Saskatchewan spokesperson for Elections Canada, Marie-France Kenny, says the first step is figuring out where you need to go to vote. It’s available on your voter information card. If you don’t have one, you can type in your postal code on the Elections Canada website. You could also call your returning office, and as a last resort because there may be a wait, depending on how busy the line is, there is a 1-800 number to call: (1-800-463-6868). You will need a driver’s licence with your current address for identification and if you don’t have that, you need 2 pieces of I.D and at least 1 one of those must have your address on it. If you haven’t registered yet, you can do so when you go to vote.
Kenny says by law, everyone who is eligible to vote must have 3 consecutive hours to do so on election day. If your work hours don’t allow for that, your employer must give you time off. For those who like to take selfies, Kenny advises that it’s against the Elections Act to take pictures inside the voting place or of a marked ballot. You are not allowed to show, film or take a picture of a marked ballot.
Saskatoon Transit is providing free service for those voting today (mon). To obtain free transit, patrons are required to download a free pass from SaskatoonTransit.ca. Passes can be used multiple times and will expire at the end of the day today (mon).
