The new report which was released to mark the 40th small business week shows that 45 thousand Canadians started a business in 2018, 40 per cent of those new entrepreneurs were new Canadians.
“The face of entrepreneurship in Canada is also changing and you see more and more woman starting businesses, more and more young Canadians and more and more new Canadians. Durham says there are four times the number of women entrepreneurs today then there were 40 years ago.”
The BDC President and CEO says there are a number of factors as to why there are more younger Canadians and new Canadians starting their own business, one of them being that are more tools to help people succeed.
“There’s a lot of support networks, access to finances. It’s a little bit easier now then it would have been say 10, 15 years ago and that’s the second reason why people are drawn into starting businesses.”
Denham presented to a number of local entrepreneurs at a Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce event Thursday afternoon. Saskatoon was one of Durham’s many stops across Canada for small business week.
