The Director of the Global Water Futures Program won’t soon forget his meeting with Swedish climate change activist Greta Thunberg.
University of Saskatchewan water scientist John Pomeroy spent six hours with the 16-year-old on a snow-covered Athabasca Glacier in a blizzard and says she was very interested in learning more about the glacier’s retreat due to climate warning.
Pomeroy says the teen was engaged and informed and asked excellent questions like how much had algae and dust affected the ice melt as well as how much ice melt had he seen over his lifetime.
He says the interaction was encouraging and refreshing and has also put a spotlight on an area in Jasper National Park that they have been studying for decades.
Pomeroy points out the amount of ice that has melted in the past year is the largest they have ever seen.
The 16-year-old sent out a tweet afterward, thanking Pomeroy and Parks Canada ecologist Brenda Shepherd.
Thunberg is scheduled to take part in a climate rally in Vancouver Friday.
