SaskPower and the Meadow Lake Tribal Council have signed a Power Purchase Agreement for up to eight megawatts of biomass power. According to SaskPower, the Meadow Lake Tribal Council Bioenergy Centre will generate carbon-neutral power using sawmill biomass residuals. It will be the first plant of its kind in Saskatchewan and is expected to produce enough base load electricity to power more than five thousand homes. In its release, SaskPower does not disclose how much it is crediting the Tribal Council for the energy. Recently, SaskPower told the solar energy community that it was decreasing their credits to 7.5 cents per kilowatt hour rather than the 14 cents it had credited before.
The Crown Corporation says this new agreement is expected to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by more than one million tonnes over 25 years, and reduce smoke and other harmful matter, improving air quality for residents. Revenue from the plant will also support programs and services such as child and family services, education and health and youth development for the nine-member First Nations of the Tribal Council.
