An inquest into the death of Deanna Whitecap begins today (mon) running through Friday in Regina. Whitecap was found unresponsive in her cell at the RCMP Indian Head Detachment in September of 2017. She was pronounced dead after being taken to Indian Head Hospital. A Coroner’s Inquest is required for anyone who dies while an inmate at a jail or a correctional facility unless the coroner is satisfied that the person’s death was due to natural causes and was not preventable. The coroner’s jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.
