A policy has been established for flags flown at City Hall and was approved at City Council yesterday (Mon). The former Proclamations Policy was repealed and replaced by the Flag and Proclamations Policy. Requests will be approved on a first come, first service basis if they are within the guidelines. The City receives numerous flag raising and proclamation requests each year. In general, requests will be approved for charitable and non-profit organizations to increase public awareness, promote fundraising activities, support major sporting, cultural and entertainment programs or other civic initiatives. In a recent newspoll question we asked: Should City Hall eliminate the practice of flying the flag, outside of city hall, of special interest groups? 86% said Yes. There are 7 flag poles at City Hall, but 4 are permanent – the Canadian, Saskatchewan, Treaty 6 Territory and the Metis Nation of Saskatchewan flags. The other 3 are guest flag poles. The Saskatchewan flag may be removed for a 4th guest flag, if necessary.
