It’s not about the sugary treats for the students of St. Joseph High School on Halloween night. It’s about collecting donations of non-perishable food for the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre with the high school’s initiative Halloweening for Hunger. Teacher Rachelle Kelln says they have been doing it for about 13 years, but it has grown much larger in the last 5 years or so. In the first few years, they would be happy to gather 500 pounds of food, but the efforts ramped up and the number of routes grew. Flyers are also delivered ahead of time to most of the streets where the students will be knocking on doors on Halloween night between 5:30 and 8:30. Last year, a record 24-thousand pounds of food was collected and the goal this year is 27-thousand. Kelln says the students have fun and when they see how much food they have gathered, there is such a feeling of pride and inspiration. The event has become so successful that a few other high schools are joining in. Rosenau Transport is providing a 40 foot truck to get the donated items to the Food Bank. For the efforts of St. Joseph High School students over the years, the Food Bank has presented the school with the inaugural Youth Leadership In Action Award.
