She is tenacious and courageous. That’s how the Canadian Taxpayers Federation describes the woman who has taken on the Onion Lake Cree Nation in a dispute over the band’s financial records and they are honouring her with an award. Charmaine Stick is the federation’s Taxfighter award winner for 2019, joining the likes of Ralph Klein and Stockwell Day. Stick’s successful lawsuit forced the First Nation to release its 2015 and 16 statements and she is fighting the band’s appeal of her successful bid to have the 2017 and 18 statements made public. Onion Lake authorities challenged the ruling to disclose the financial information including payments to the Chief and council within 30 days for face a 10-thousand dollar fine under The First Nations Financial Transparency Act. She also testified in front of a parliamentary committee and delivered a petition exceeding 30-thousand signatures to the Prime Minister’s office. The federation’s Todd MacKay says they are proud to support Stick through the lengthy court process and feels she has inspired the Indigenous community. Stick will receive the award November 19th in Regina.
