The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations is calling on the Prime Minister to drop an appeal against a Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ruling.
The ruling will compensate First Nations children who were discriminated against by the government’s child welfare system.
In September, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ordered the federal government to pay the maximum allowed amount of $40 thousand dollars to each First Nations child unnecessarily take from their homes and placed into care under the on-reserve child welfare system dating back to January 1st, 2006.
Last month, the federal government filed an appeal.
FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron said the compensation will not only provide a healing aspect, but will also provide something that can be used to invest with for the future.
Cameron adds that they encourage all individuals to contact the FSIN or their local First Nation organization on how they can invest their money for the future if the federal government’s appeal is denied or dropped.
The federal government’s decision to challenge came three days before the deadline to file an appeal.
