Veterans Affairs Canada is highlighting the 75th anniversary of the Second World War’s Italian Campaign for Veterans’ Week. More than 93-thousand Canadians served in Italy from the summer of 1943 to early 1945, fighting their way across a challenging landscape of mountains and river valleys.
In more recent history, in the past six decades more than 175-thousand members of the Canadian military have participated in dozens of international peace keeping efforts. More than 17-hundred made the ultimate sacrifice.
Chair of Saskatoon’s Poppy Campaign, Diane Robson, says they get many requests for veterans to speak at schools leading up to Remembrance Day. She suggests checking out the Saskatoon Museum of Military Artifacts in the basement of the Nutana Legion, which has memorabilia from World War 1 and on. There are uniforms from all of the Forces, models of different ships, a trench model, weaponry and even flight records of some missions.
