This past spring the provincial government announced changes to how additional retail liquor permits are distributed, which leads us to the first auctions for available permits beginning November 27th and bids closing December 6th. Communities in the first round of auctions are Estevan, Martensville, Melfort, Weyburn and Warman.
Permit availability is determined by population and the number of current liquor retailers operating. The community must have a minimum population of 500 to be eligible.
Interested bidders are required to register online and the opening bid for each auction is $1-thousand. Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority, Gene Makowsky, says they have received a fair amount of interest since first announcing the policy changes. More auctions will be held over the next few months until all current expressions of interest are addressed.
