Amendments to The Coroners Act have been introduced in the Legislature after a review with recommendations by the Saskatchewan Coroners Service. Chief Coroner Clive Weighill led the review before he was appointed chief coroner.
The amendments would allow coroners to make recommendations after an inquest and allow the chief coroner to appoint coroners. They also include authorizing coroners to investigate the deaths of Saskatchewan people who die in other jurisdictions or whose bodies have been moved from this province, and updating coroners’ investigative powers, including the authority to reopen investigations in cases where new evidence arises. Another amendment would allow a family member or personal representative of a deceased person to request a review of a coroner’s decision not to hold an inquest.
