The Saskatchewan NDP is urging the SaskParty government to commit to a mid-year review of school populations to ensure funding keeps up enrolment growth. In the Legislature on Monday, Ryan Meili stated that enrolment in Saskatoon public elementary schools has increased by 10 per cent over the past 4 years, but per-student funding has fallen. He adds that although 40 Education Assistants have been added in the last 4 years, but that’s alongside thousands of additional students as well. Meili would like to see classroom size not exceeding 2 dozen students.
Premier Scott Moe replied that the province is providing more than $2.5-billion to education this year, including funding for speech language pathologists, occupational therapists and psychologists in schools, plus a committee has been formed to look at class size and composition.
