According to a poll from Children’s First Canada, Canadians greatly overestimate the well-being of children. 71 per cent of Canadians – and 73 per cent in Saskatchewan and Manitoba – believe that Canada ranks in the top 10 among wealthy nation on children’s well-being. But Canada actually ranks 25th. Only 45 per cent of people in Saskatchewan and Manitoba place a high priority on improving children’s well-being. Once informed of Canada’s actual rank, 90 per cent of respondent in Canada said the country should put a high priority on improving children’s well-being. Sara Austin, founder and CEO of Children’s First Canada says, “It’s discouraging to know there is so much work that needs to be done to improve the health and well-being of Canada’s children, but Canadians aren’t aware of the problem.” Some of the top issues affecting children, as identified by respondents are: mental health, depression and anxiety; bullying and safety online; and health, fitness, obesity, and nutrition.
