Holodomor was a man-made famine imposed by the former Soviet Union between 1932 and 1933.
Holodomor in Ukrainian means extermination by hunger. A memorial candle was lit, to remain burning, during – this – Holodomor Memorial Week. Up to 10 million perished.
It was a genocide. Despite a record grain harvest, crops were confiscated and no-one was allowed to leave their communities in search of food.
A permanent reminder of the tragedy is a statue on the park grounds at Wascana Centre. The statue is of a young girl clutching wheat.
According to the 2016 census 1,359,655 people in Canada identify has having Ukrainian heritage. And 143,700 live in Saskatchewan.
