Saskatoon City Council has endorsed changes to the city’s cycling bylaw. The new changes will not only affect cyclists but motorists too. Some of the revisions include a one-meter buffer for motorists who are passing a cyclist and allowing youth 14 and under to ride on the sidewalk
Council also voted against a proposal to remove a requirement that cyclists use dedicated bike lanes on roads where the lanes are available. Reports have also been asked to come back providing information on the possibility of banning children 14 and under from riding on sidewalks in the BIDS along with industrial parks. The changes were endorsed yesterday (mon) and administration will now draft and present an amended bylaw at a future date along with more reports that were requested from city councilors.
Council also voted in favour of sticking with paper notices about detours at bus stops. Saskatoon Transit had proposed going all digital by April by posting notices on the City’s website or the the Transit app. Many residents previously presented to the city’s transportation committee stating that they don’t have smartphones with data plans or a device that can connect to internet to view digital notices. Robert Clipperton with Bus Riders Saskatoon also presented to council Monday saying that residents who don’t have data plans or wi-fi wouldn’t be able to receive notices prior to waiting for the bus. Councillors Troy Davies and Bev Dubois were against continuing with paper notices.
