Be kind, because you never know what someone is going through. That’s the advice from Connor Rodriguez, a community support advocate with OUT Saskatoon as Transgender Awareness Week winds down and Transgender Day of Remembrance begins tomorrow (Wed). On the Day of Remembrance, vigils are held across the world and the names of transgender people who have died in the past year because of anti-trans violence or suicide are read aloud. Rodriguez explains queer folks die by suicide in astounding numbers. He is transgender and says it can be a scary world, but there is more awareness now and it’s not as dangerous to be trans as it once was. The challenges include ignorance, anti-trans violence, navigating social spaces, dealing with the medical system and getting jobs. The Day of Remembrance vigil in Saskatoon is on the USask campus at 6 tomorrow night (Wed) in the Education Students’ Lounge. Rodriguez says there are actually 2 weeks in the year that are significant in the trans community and this is the more somber one. In March is Gender Diversity Awareness Week, which is more of a celebration.
